Chris Matakas is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, Author, and Owner/Lead Instructor of the Matakas Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in Florence, NJ. His obsession with human development began in martial arts, in which Chris received his black belt from UFC veteran Ricardo Almeida in 2015, achieved an undefeated amateur MMA record, and published 7 books about using Jiu Jitsu as a vehicle for personal development, 2 of which reached best seller status in the category.

Chris founded the Matakas Jiu Jitsu Academy in 2017 to serve his community through Jiu Jitsu, as he believes that it is the environment that Jiu Jitsu creates which allows us to transcend the comforts of our modern lives through purposeful struggle in the direction of our goals. The academy has become a center for personal growth in central New Jersey.

Beyond the mat, Chris offers 1-on-1 performance coaching to those looking for guidance in the achievement of self-actualization. Heavily influenced by the teachings of Carl Jung, Jordan Peterson, and Aldous Huxley, Chris believes that the most fulfilling life is one spent in the pursuit of self-mastery, becoming the best version of ourselves so that we have more to give our friends, family, and community.

Life is hard. It's also ineffably beautiful, a gift from Grace for us all to enjoy. A sound philosophy gives us the resilience to confront the challenges of life in the most productive way, so that we may achieve our highest selves and experience deep meaning. Chris would be honored to walk alongside you on your path and help you become someone capable of achieving your goals and providing massive value to the world.
