After a long and arduous process of almosts and not quites, we have signed a lease! The future home of Matakas Jiu Jitsu will be 2043 Rt. 130 in Burlington, NJ, where we will start classes by summer’s end.
I have been training under Professor Ricardo Almeida, UFC veteran and Jiu Jitsu World Champion, a 4th degree black belt under Renzo Gracie, for just shy of a decade. A rare opportunity I did not deserve, I have sought to make the most of this experience by striving to understand Jiu Jitsu, and its benefits off the mats, to the furthest extent I am capable.
I believe that we have a personal responsibility to become the highest version of of ourselves, and to use that self in the service of others. Jiu Jitsu is the best vehicle that I have found with which to pursue character development. Whether as children learning to put forth effort and focus, or adults learning self-defense while getting a great workout, Jiu Jitsu trains the aspects of our being which most need training.
Jiu Jitsu gives us the tools to be more effective in our daily lives; and as we each grow, so does the community which sustains us. This is why I will teach this beautiful art until my body crumbles.
My focus is not to train UFC fighters or to develop Jiu Jitsu world champions. This may happen along the way, but my sole aim is to create a community in which people from all walks of life can come together and pursue their individual goals as a collective, benefiting from the sincere study of Jiu Jitsu.
All the while remembering: Jiu Jitsu is the vehicle. Not the road.
It is a great honor to share this art with Florence/Burlington community, and I cannot wait to get started!
Wishing you all the best and hoping to see you on the mats soon,
