Our tagline is “Where we pursue individual goals as a collective.” I wanted to briefly discuss why we chose it, what it means, and why it is so important to the health of the community.
Jiu Jitsu seems to be the most challenging martial art, both physically and mentally, to learn and practice. It also seems to be the most worthwhile, in practicality in self-defense, improved fitness, and the transference of skills across disciplines, a result of its heavy cognitive demand.
Our classes will be formed by contrasting students with differing motives: weight loss, self-defense, community, competition, or simply finding a hobby. No matter one’s goal, the more sincere these students pursue a mastery of Jiu Jitsu, the more likely they are to achieve whatever desire got them started.
Jiu Jitsu forces us to grow in the exact way our particular humanity most requires.
At Matakas BJJ, the goal of the group will be the goal of the individual. Whatever need brings our students in the door, we will use the supportive community and growth which Jiu Jitsu provides to help that student achieve it.
We will pursue individual goals as a team, as a cooperative enterprise. This environment so rarely exists in the secular world, and that’s why what we are about to do is so important. We need each other to achieve our highest selves, and with finite time to do so, we must work as efficiently as possible.
That’s why we pursue individual goals as a collective.
