I was at a wedding this past weekend and so many friends offered a similar sentiment, “Congrats on your new Jiu Jitsu school! … but what’s Jiu Jitsu?” Below is a quick description of what Jiu Jitsu is, why it’s valuable, and why you should seriously consider trying it yourself.
What Jiu Jitsu Is
Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art which focuses on timing and leverage to subdue an assailant. The goal of the Jiu Jitsu practitioner is to take the fight to the ground, using variations of Judo and Wrestling takedowns, and then utilize positional advancement to control the attacker, ultimately ending the altercation with a choke or joint manipulation.
Jiu Jitsu allows a smaller, weaker individual to safely defend themselves against a larger aggressor, without ever throwing a punch.
Jiu Jitsu is the most efficient and reliable means of winning a fight, while choosing what degree of damage you will inflict upon your attacker. But self-defense is only the beginning. The daily training of Jiu Jitsu is just as important as the ability to defend one’s self.
In our culture, I’d argue it’s even more important.
Why Jiu Jitsu Is Valuable Beyond Self-Defense
Jiu Jitsu is a puzzle, forcing our adaptation physically, mentally, and emotionally, as we learn to navigate challenges in the most productive way. Shaping our lens to overcome obstacles and work through our limitations, Jiu Jitsu serves as basic training for character development.
The purposeful training of Jiu Jitsu best develops the virtues our humanity most requires: Humility, Resolve, and Efficacy.
Why You Should Try Jiu Jitsu
Because life is short. Because we only have so much time and energy to put into our character development, and none of us can do it alone.
Whether your goal is to lose weight, learn how to defend yourself, or simply meet some new friends, Jiu Jitsu is the vehicle with which we mold ourselves and purposefully seek our own development.
The Jiu Jitsu academy gives us the opportunity to work toward our goals in a safe and friendly environment, with like-minded individuals all using Jiu Jitsu to become better versions of themselves.
Jiu Jitsu has been the single greatest vehicle for my own development. I have found nothing which so rivals the growth Jiu Jitsu offers, and this is why I will serve my community through this art for the rest of my life.
As an aside, I have never met someone who regretted their time spent in this art. If you do not already, I hope you will consider using Jiu Jitsu as a vehicle for your own growth!
